Be sure to register with us before coming to the tryout. Our booth is usually at the end of the circuit. which is roughly situated near the north entrance of the PEC. When you enter the PEC from the south entrance by Union Street, go up the stairs, you'll see a big trophy case in the middle of the hallway, our booth is somewhere behind it, but you'll have to go all the way around in order to reach us as there will be people preventing you from going through. We will do what we were trained to do, what we were bred to do, what we were born to do... Even though the margin of error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast, and you don't quite catch it... But, if you are going to win any battle, you have to do one thing: You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body is never tired if the mind is not tired. Don't scratch your head unless it itches and don't dance unless you hear some music. You will not be intimidated. You're never beaten until you admit it. Take calculated risks. That's going to make the difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying... Now, I can't make you do it. You've got to look at the guy next to you. You're going to see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows, when it comes down to it, you're going to do the same for him. That's 7 players on the field functioning as one single unit: team, team, team - no one more important than the other. Everyone starts on an even footing to earn a spot on the team. Even if you have a basic level of ultimate experience, but a strong athletic background, we highly encourage everyone to attend. The Queen’s program is built upon development of young players to become an integral part of the team in later years.

Season Details: The season can be summarized as a “short blitz”. Ensure that your CHIN touches the towel after every repetition. Also, ensure your arms are FULLY extended before performing the next push-up.

****Hang from a pull-up bar using an overhang grip. Arms must be fully extended before beginning. Be training at least twice a week, and be throwing at least 3 times, every day would be ideal.

With most of our returning players wrapped up in the Club season, I know this won't be a problem, but keep the Queen's work ethic; we all know other fitness regimens are sub-par.

For all hopefuls (greenhorn or veteran), tryouts will be at the start of September, the week after Frosh Week. The men entered the tournament ranked number one in the nation, with a perfect 7-0 record on the season. However, due to the weather conditions at this year’s Canadian University Ultimate Championship, the team finished their season undefeated but without the title. After round robin play on Friday was cancelled due to rain, the men took to the fields on Saturday to play a condensed version of the preliminary round. Tournament officials ranked each competing team, and placed the top eight teams in two pools of four. These two “power pools” were created to ensure that teams considered to be contenders for the national championship had the opportunity to play a competitive round robin before the final playoff rounds on Sunday. Queen’s easily dispatched McMaster 13-2 in their first match on Saturday morning. The men then edged U of T 13-9 and beat Carleton in a convincing 13-5 decision.

In their last game of round robin play on Saturday, Queen’s took on UBC in what appeared to be a preview of the national final. Queen’s came into the tournament ranked number one, and UBC was right behind them in second. Facing wet and windy conditions, the men’s team battled their western rivals in what proved to be the final match of a remarkable season. Queen’s narrowly slipped past their formidable foes with an 8-7 victory, improving their undefeated record to 11-0. “It was an intense game,” said team veteran Jamie Miller. “[UBC] had traveled so far, they definitely did not want to lose to us.”

After a successful series of games on Saturday, the playoff round was set to begin on Sunday morning. However, the tournament was officially cancelled due to unplayable field conditions. Friday’s rainy weather had soaked the fields, and Saturday’s intense competition had torn them apart. The men’s team captain Ryan Lee said his team was disheartened by—but understanding of—the decision to call off the rest of the tournament. “Of course, it was disappointing,” he said. “The Canadian nationals are the culmination of our season.”

With the cancellation of Sunday’s playoff round, no clear national champion has been declared for the season—the Canadian Ultimate Players Association has officially confirmed that this year’s title has been cancelled. “No champion was announced, and the official results will remain as such for this year,” said University Championship Director Dee Roderique. Although disappointed by the official outcome of the National Championships, Lee said the men’s ultimate team should be proud of their accomplishments this season. “Even though the tourney was called, we still went undefeated all season,” he said. “We practiced hard and played hard—we have a lot be proud about. I’m looking forward to the spring.”

Writtten by: Dan Robson, Assistant Sports Editor, The Journal

CUUC 2005

From www.canadianultimate.com

2005 Canadian University Ultimate Championships
October 14th - 16th, 2005
Montreal, Quebec
Divisions: Open, Women's

Saturday, October 15th, 10:00pm
We are sorry to announce that all tournament play for Sunday has been cancelled due to the state of the fields. Play Fast; Never Hurry
Moving quickly is good, but something always goes wrong when you try
to move faster than you are able. If you try to throw too fast, your
throw will blade. If you try to turn too fast, you'll slip. If you
try to throw before you've finished catching, you'll drop. These are
the most common mistakes among intermediate players. Intermediate
players know how to do all three of these things, but they fail when
they forget to give each manoeuvre its due attention. Everything
should feel relaxed and natural, like Jet Li calmly disassembling his
enemy.

2. Intense, but Controlled
You must want the disc and you must want to score, but you must temper
drive with calm awareness. When the defensive bid is there, go for it;
when it isn't, cut off the break/swing pass. When you lose possession,
get on defense. When you make an awesome layout grab, don't throw
away the disc. Don't throw to a mediocre cut just because it is there.
Remember to dump at stall 5.

3. On Defense, Anticipate
Know what options are available to your opponent. Someone in the
endzone wants to cut in. Someone who has run in wants to run out.
Someone who has run out wants to run in.

4. On Offense, Create Opportunity
If you can't get the disc yourself, you might be able to make space for
someone to cut into. If someone else has run to occupy one opportunity
(e.g. deep), run to occupy the complementary opportunity (e.g. short).
Clear the lanes; take what they give you; throw what they give you.

5. On Defense, Take Away Opportunity
Help your teammates by recognizing what your opponents want. If you
are in a position to do so, flash the forceside lane momentarily. Call
switches when your mark and someone else's are moving in opposite
directions. Cut off the continuation pass. Always chase a huck, no
matter what your mark does.

6. On Offense, Misdirect Your Mark
Speed up before you turn. Cut behind your mark's back. Fake a throw
convincingly. Make a boulder-cut. Become unpredictable and demand
your mark's full attention.

7. On Defense, Follow Your Mark, but Don't Chase
A defender must choose an area of denial, and stand between his mark
and that area. He must choose a buffer zone between himself and his
mark. These two things he must keep constant, regardless of what his
mark chooses to do. Never let the buffer shorten or lengthen. If he
cuts toward you, maintain your area of denial; if he cuts away,
maintain your area of denial. When your mark cuts away from you,
pursue, but do not try to close your buffer zone-- this is called
"chasing," and he will change directions as soon as you try to catch
up. Listen for the "up" call, and then forget about your mark; play
the disc now instead.

8. Get pumped for Easterns.

4 days and counting.

Sponsorship Acquired!

Queen's Ultimate is now proudly sponsored by the good people at VC Ultimate.

Training Camp- Sept. 17/18- Polson Park

Training camp will resume tommorow on Sunday September 18, 2005. Meet at the PEC @ 09:45 and we will run to Polson Park as a team.

Bring white/dark jerseys, water, cleats and whatever else you will need. Since the spring of 2004, when a devastating loss to Delaware and a subsequent demoralizing defeat to George Washington eliminated us from the Metro East Region, the grizzled Queen's veterans have been determined to make nationals.

Our wide-eyed rookies heard the bitter tale of our defeat, and the team was forged together by a common goal - Corvallis, Oregon. We trained hard in the fall, and although glorious, our victory at Canadian Nationals was merely a stepping stone on the path to Corvallis.

During the fierce Canadian winter, we practiced indoors and burned our lungs out running track. As Regionals grew closer, our training became more urgent. Outdoor practices began just after the snow melted, and our training schedule evolved to include running Zone 5 workouts on the sporadic hills of the Canadian Shield. We grew individually and as a team, always holding distant Corvallis in our sights.

We beat rival teams Cornell and G-Dub and made it to the finals of Regionals. Pittsburgh got up on us early in the final game, but after a 12-2 run, we had made it. Laughter, tears and shotgunned beers as Corvallis was finally within our reach. Later, as we satiated our hunger with tiny White Castle burgers, we wondered if nationals tasted like fried onions. This weekend at Corvallis, we will not only taste the west-coast air. We will taste victory.

Huck of the Irsh Champions

The fields in Baltimore were deemed unplayable by the Baltimore County Rec and Parks Dept. on Wednesday afternoon, causing the tournament to be relocated to Salisbury, MD, about 2.5 hours away from the original site. The additional drive forced several teams to drop in the days leading up to the tournament including Ohio Sate, Ohio U. and Wentworth on the open side.

Wind on Saturday was about 20mph steady, with sustained gusts of 30+mph, which meant lots of zone defense. Weather got better for Sunday, as the temperature rose to the high 40's for parts of the day, and the wind returned to much lower speeds.

Mothership HOTI History
Queen's-Kingston: Returned for their 3rd straight HOTI appearance, must have been glad to see NC State would not be appearing this year after losing to State in the finals in 2003 (17-16), and last year in the semis (11-10). Queen's moves the disc really well, with Adam Melnyk keying their offense. Tons of give-and-go's leading to long hucks. Several players with solid break mark throws, and confident receivers. Delaware came out a little flat in the finals, starting out down 3-1. Sideshow seemed to have left some of their trademark intensity two fields over where they beat Maryland earlier. Nick Purfico led Delaware with several layout d's and big receptions, even when the score had gotten out of hand. Queen's takes home the trophy and the tourney fee waiver for next year's tournament.

Written by Dave Branick, HOTI TD

Recap of the 2004 Canadian Season

This weekend in Hamilton, ON, were the Canadian University Ultimate Championships. We started play on Friday, with convincing wins over Carleton and Nippising, before the weather turned really fowl and caused the cancellation for the rest of Friday's play.

Saturday started out with a win over the University of Guelph team, which was a true test of our character, after being down 4-0 to start the game. We pulled together and had a convincing win 13-6, to finish initial pool play.

Our first cross-over game was against Lakehead, which we dominated, 13-2. Then came McGill, with us winning 13-5, giving us a bye into the quarter finals.

Quarter finals were against Carleton again, and we had a great win, putting us into the semi finals against the host McMaster team. McMaster came out pumped, and gave us a real tight first half, at which we were up 7-6. We had an outstanding second half, and took the game 13-8, giving us the birth in the finals that we had been looking for - a rematch with UBC, whom beat us last year in the final.

The weather turned very gusty for the final, but it never seemed to faze us like it did the UBC team, although it did make for some very long points. In a time capped game to 11, Tom Dowler (finals MVP) caught our final score with a spectacular lay-out grab.

The entire team played amazing all weekend long. Leadership on and off the field from Adam Melnyk, clutch playing by Owen Blain, Greg Seaton and Ryan Lee really made the difference for us.

Some Statistics:
2001: Third place
2002: Champions
2003: Second place
2004: Champions

2004 season: Undefeated 15-0 record.

(No team scored more than 8 points against us)

Stuart Netherton
Co-captain Men's Ultimate Frisbee Team

Coming Soon

The future online home of Queen's University Men's Ultimate Frisbee team.
